History. It happened today in Barcelona on 24th September |
It happened today in Barcelona24th September24th September 1957Opening of FC Barcelona's first Camp Nou stadium with a capacity of 93,053 spectators. The first game ever at Camp Nou stadium was FC Barcelona team versus an invited all-star Polish team playing under the name 'Warsaw XI'. Originally a Polish team, Legia Warsaw, had been invited to play the inauguration game, but by a decision of the Polish Football Association an all-star team of well-known players from all over Poland instead played FC Barcelona under the banner of the Warsaw XI, with a Mermaid crest on their shirts. The opening match was played in front of an audience of 90,000 fans and was won 4:2 by FC Barcelona. ![]() One of the spectators from Poland, Henryk Szczepański, described the match as follows: “We flew to Barcelona for the opening of their stadium, I think via Amsterdam, but it wasn’t a pre-planned match. Barcelona had 24 players on the bench, we had 13 from us. Eleven played, two sat, except that two had already fallen after the first half and we were left with a ‘bare’ eleven for the second half. To be able to play this match was a great experience for us. The rivals were strong, not technical players of the type of Messi, Neymar or someone else, but really fast. They were flying like they were possessed. There were no leaders, but there was a team. (...) At halftime everyone would lie down on the ground and just look up to the Mother of God to catch their breath.” Related pagesFC Barcelona ticketsCamp Nou stadium What's on September Barcelona events © Copyright Barcelonayellow.com Do not copy from this page without permission.
