Barcelona hosts the 37th America’s Cup in August and October of 2024. The America's Cup is one of the oldest and most prestigious trophies in international sports. it's the world's oldest continually running international sports competition. The competition is a series of match races between just two sailing yachts. The winner of the America's Cup then becomes the defender and becomes responsible for organizing the next edition of the competition. The current defender of the America's Cup is Emirates Team New Zealand so, as current holder of the 36th America's Cup, they got to choose the next host city to organize the Louis Vuitton 37th America's Cup - and they chose Barcelona over bids from Málaga and Jeddah.  Albert Vilumara is corporate director of America's Cup Event Barcelona and he's very confident that Barcelona will be "the world capital of yachting" in October 2024. The entire period, from the first to the last race, takes 14 weeks and the racing itself free for the public to enjoy. For the general public there will also be many fun activities for visitors to enjoy during the America's Cup competition, many of them in the Race Village on the Moll de la Fusta wharf.

The Teams

The "challenger" teams that come to Barcelona to challenge the New Zealanders are the British Ineos Britannia , the Swiss Alinghi Red Bull Racing , the Italian Luna Rossa Pirelli Prada Team, the American NYYC American Magic and last, but not least the French Orient Express Racing Team. The best sailors in the world will be at the helms and among them are Peter Burling, Blair Tuke, Sir Ben Ainslie, Tom Slingsby, Jimmy Spithill and a multitude of other America's Cup veteran sailors and Olympic champions.

AC75 boat class

The 37th America's Cup features the AC75 boat class which is a foiling monohull design. These boats are known for their innovative foiling technology, allowing the hulls to lift out of the water, reducing drag and increasing speed. The America's Cup is known for its high-tech and high-performance sailing yachts, and the competition attracts top sailors and designers from around the world. The Prada Cup adds an additional layer of excitement to the overall event by determining which challenger will have the opportunity to compete for the prestigious America's Cup.

Host city 2024

Barcelona becomes the first city in the world to host both an Olympic Games (1992) and now an America’s Cup event. America’s Cup Defender Emirates Team New Zealand CEO Grant Dalton was delighted to announce Barcelona as the Host Venue after a long and competitive venue selection process. “Barcelona really is one of the most recognised cities in the world so to have the ability to host the most recognised sailing event in the world is hugely exciting. As Defender of the America’s Cup, we have always felt the responsibility to grow the event, the audience, and the sport of sailing on a global scale and certainly having the event hosted in a significant city such as Barcelona will allow us to propel the growth trajectory on the global sporting stage. When thinking ahead to the 37th America’s Cup and the AC75’s racing within a few hundred metres of the Barcelona beach, waterfront, and race village fan engagement zones it will be nothing less than spectacular.”

Preliminary Regatta

The America's Cup starts with a Preliminary Regatta sailing competition (previously known as the Prada Cup). This also takes place in Barcelona prior to the America's Cup and starts on August 22 2024.  The Preliminary Regatta is a sailing competition to find the challenger who will race against the current defender in the America's Cup. The team that performs the best in the Preliminary Regatta earns the right to challenge the defender in the America's Cup match. All six America’s Cup teams will compete in the Preliminary Regatta in their new AC75 boats. The Preliminary Regatta racing is from August 22nd to 25th 2024 with four days of match races to find the two fastest teams. The top two teams from the Preliminary Regatta will progress to the winner-takes-all final match race on the fourth and last day to decide the ultimate winner of the event. Races kick off daily at 2.00 pm (14:00 CEST) and run until 4 or 5 pm, depending on the race schedule. All of the teams entered in the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup in Barcelona 2024 take part in the Barcelona Preliminary Regatta. Download race calendar
