Guide to Modernist Barcelona

Palau Guell opened to the public in 2011 after 7 years of renovation. Palau Guell was the town house of Gaudí's immensely wealthy patron, Count Eusebi Güell, who commissioned the building in 1885 and made it his family home for 20 years. At that time it was one of the most spectacular and luxurious buildings in Barcelona and Eusebi Güell was one of the richest men in the world.

During the Spanish civil war from 1936 to 1939 Palau Guell was used as a police station. After that it was owned by the Barcelona Council, who used it for a theatre institute 'el Institut del Teatre.'

Palau Guell was an early sign of Gaudí's future architectural style. It was built in stone, coated with delicate marble and decorated with high quality wood. The inauguration coincided with the 1888 World Fair Exhibition in Barcelona and many social and official functions were hosted here. The building was a pleasant surprise for the citizens of Barcelona and earned great admiration of visitors because it was such a radical break from the style of other contemporary palaces in Barcelona.

Palau Guell was restored to the original design under the direction of architect Antoni González. The entire building is open to the public, but with a limit of 160 visitors, so queues can be expected during peak season.

The admission fee includes an excellent audio guide in several languages and the building has an very nice gift shop.
