Barcelona Events 2024Santa Tecla Festival 2024 - TarragonaFesta major 2024Event date: 13-24 September 2024 Event location: Tarragona - coastal city 1 hour south of Barcelona Information: Santa Tecla Tarragona festa major Tarragona near Barcelona. Tarragona has two festa majors each year, the Santa Tecla, which has fire as its main theme - and Sant Magi, which has water as the central theme. Santa Tecla festival dates back to 1321. It takes place in the second half of September and culminates on 22, 23 and 24 September every year with the main parade and many Catalan traditions including human towers. In 2002 was declared “Festival of tourist interest” by the Spanish government and in 2010 was declared “Patrimonial festival of national interest” by the Catalan government. In 1091, the Pope Urban II restored, if only juridically, the metropolitan seat of Tarragona and declared the festivities of Santa Tecla as a day of obligation and main celebration of the year. In 1321 the arm relic of the patron saint Tecla arrived in Tarragona from Antioch and is now in the Chapel of St. Thecla in Tarragona Cathedral. Every September 23 the relic of the arm is paraded through the historic center of the city. The story of the relic is that in 1321 Santa Tecla was already the patron saint of Tarragona. The Tarragona cathedral was almost finished, but the city did not have any relics of their saint. Thecla was a saint of the early Christian Church, and a reported follower of Paul the Apostle. King James II of Aragon requested a relic of Thecla and was given the arm, which arrived in Tarragona on 17 May 1321 from Antioch and was interred in the cathedral.
