Empúries Greek and Roman ruins

Empúries (Ampurias in Spanish language) is the most important Greek archaeological site in Spain and the biggest greek ruins outside Greece. Ruines d'Empuries is a 2,500-year-old Greek/Roman Empúries historic site on the Costa Brava coast of Catalonia, Spain.

Empúries was the frist Greek and Roman town on the Iberian Peninsula. The Greek town was called Emporion and was founded in 575 BC. This later became a Roman town called Emporiae, which dates back to the early 1st century BC.

Emporiae was built over the foundations of the first Roman military camp on the penisular which was established in the 2nd century BC during the second Punic war against Carthage.

What can you see

You can see the layout and ruins of the Greek and Roman towns. You can see mosaics from Roman homes, a sculpture of Asclepius and ruins of the Roman Forum. To make this more interesting we recommend that you book guided tours and visit the museum which displays Greek bronze, ceramic and sculpture.

A short walk north along the coast gets you to the mediaval village of Sant Marti d'Empuries. To the south is L'Escala which is a popular tourist resort.
