How to get to Penedès from BarcelonaPenedès is one of the biggest wine making regions in Spain and the biggest near Barcelona. Penedès is located just 1 hour to the south-west of Barcelona which is convenient for wine and cava tours from Barcelona. Penedès is located in the south of Catalonia between the pre-coastal mountain range (Serralada Pre-litoral) and the Mediterranean Sea. It has three counties which are Alt Penedès with capital Vilafranca del Penedès, Baix Penedès with capital el Vendrel and Garraf with capital Vilanova i la Geltrú. Penedès has a Spanish Denominació d'Origen (DO). The Penedès DO includes all the Penedès region and municipalities of four other comarques: Anoia, Alt Camp, Baix Llobregat and Tarragonès. The Penedès area is considered one of the Spain's best wine-producing regions alongside the Rioja region. The Penedès is also one of the oldest viticultural areas in Europe. It is also well known for sparking wine Cava production, which has its own Denominació d'Origen. You can get there by train, car, or tour but of course the vineyards and wineries are scattered around the region The capital city of the wine area is Vilafranca de Penedes.
