Backpackers tend to stay in the old medieval parts of Barcelona where there are many small hostels and budget hotels. Many prefer neighbourhoods in the Cuitat Vella - old city.

Most popular in the old city are Gothic area, El Born, Ribera and Santa Catarina. 

Barcelona is generally considered to be safe but at night the Raval and lower parts of La Rambla can be be unsafe.

Also popular is the Gracia area of Barcelona which is considered to be the most bohemian part of Barcelona city.
