Plaça de Sant Jaume is the main square in the
Gothic quarter of Barcelona. Placa de Sant Jaume is often used for festivals and procession - and also for demonstrations. Plaça de Sant Jaume is located on the ancient site of the Roman forum in Roman town called
Barcino which later became Barcelona. In Roman times this plaza was the city center and was on the junction of the Roman citys main streets
Cardo Maximus and
Decumanus Maximus.
Barcino's four city gates were at the end of these two streets which today are called
Carrer Ciutat /
Carrer del Bisbe ( = Decumanus Maximus) and
Carrer Llibreteria (= Cardo Maximus). Barcino was a small city but even today there are impressive remains of Barcelona's
Roman city walls in the gothic area.
Plaça de Sant Jaume houses two government buildings. One is the renaissance palace
El Palau de la Generalitat which is the home of the regional government of Catalonia region - called the Generalitat de Catalunya. Opposite you can see the neo-classical town hall building of the ciy council of Barcelona called
