The Roman Villa Els Munts near Tarragona

The Roman Villa Els Munts near Tarragona. Although in ruins Els Munts is considered of the best preserved aristocratic villas from Roman Spain. THe Roman Villa Els Munts is near the village of Altafulla in the Tarragona province in a beautiful spot on a hill with amazing views.

an incomparable setting on the shores of the Mediterranean, the inhabitants of this country residence would have enjoyed the tranquillity of rural life and the beauty of the surroundings, but without foregoing luxury and refinement. It was a house designed for the leisure and relaxation of the Tarraco elites and would no doubt have played a key role in their social, political and economic relations.

In the winter of 122-123 AD, the emperor Hadrian visited Tarraco. During his stay he presided over the Provincial Council – the meeting of the representatives of all the peoples of the province – and ordered the restoration of the Temple of Augustus.

Perhaps Adrian stayed in a villa like Els Munts? The location of the villa near Tarraco, the large size, sumptuousness and luxurious decoration and the discoery of a statue of Antinoüs – Hadrian’s favourite lover – and the inclusion of a large Mithraeum (Mithraic temple, erected in classical antiquity by the worshippers of Mithras) make the Villa Els Munts a candidate for hosting the emperor during his visit.
