Fundació Joan Miró Barcelona. Joan Miró Foundation. The Miro museum in Barcelona is located on the Avinguda de Miramar on Montjuïc hill.
Joan Miró was a Catalan/Spanish painter, sculptor and ceramist born in Barcelona, Spain. The Miró museum is worth a visit for the artworks on display and also for the architectural design of the building and lovely city views from Montjuic hill. The Miró Foundtaion houses the largest collection in the world of Miró's work including paintings, drawings, sculptures, and tapestries as well as his complete graphic work. A popular exhibit is the
Alexander Calder Mercury fountain, one of the most toxic works of art in the world. It was first exhibited at the Spanish Pavilion of the 1937 World Fair in Paris as a tribute to Spanish town Almadén, which at the time supplied over half of the world's mercury at the time. The Mercury Fountain was commissioned to commerate the siege of the town by the dictator Franco's troops. The fountain is now displayed in a container because mercury is highly toxic.
