Fundació Joan Miró Barcelona. Joan Miró Foundation. Showcase of Joan Miro's artworks in hilltop museum with courtyards and terraces. The Miro museum in Barcelona is located on the Avinguda de Miramar on Montjuïc hill. Joan Miró was a Catalan/Spanish painter, sculptor and ceramist born in Barcelona, Spain. The Miró museum is worth a visit for the artworks on display, for the architectural design of the building and for the lovely city views from Montjuic hill. The Miró Foundtaion houses the largest collection in the world of Miró's work which includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, and tapestries as well as his complete graphic work.
A popular exhibit at the Miro museum is the Mercury Fountain by Alexander Calder. This is one of the most toxic works of art in the world. It was commissioned by the Spanish Republican government for the 1937 World Exhibition in Paris where it was first exhibited at the Spanish Pavilion. It is a tribute to Spanish town Almadén, which at the time supplied over half of the world's mercury at the time. The fountain was commissioned to commerate the siege of the town by the dictator Franco's troops. The mines at Almadén, Spain produced some 250,000 metric tons of mercury over nearly two millennia of operation. The mine was long worked by criminals and slave laborers, most of whom died of mercury poisoning. American sculptor Alexander Calder built a graceful fountain which, instead of water, would pump pure mercury. The fountain is now displayed behind glass to control toxic mercury vapors
