Barcelona Events 2025Harlem Globetrotters Barcelona 2025Date: 25th May 2025 Event location: Olímpic Arena Badalona near Barcelona. Information: Legends of the basketball court, the Harlem Globetrotters tour Spain and visit Badalona by Barcelona in May 2025. The Harlem Globetrotters didn't actually start in Harlem. They were founded in 1926 in Chicago as the Savoy Big Five, a competitive all-Black basketball team. Their founder, Abe Saperstein, saw their potential and renamed them the New York Harlem Globetrotters in 1927 - Harlem being the epicenter of Black culture at the time. Though their name suggested world travel, they actually didn't leave the U.S. for decades. Initially, the Globetrotters were a serious basketball team, proving themselves against white teams at a time when the NBA was closed to Black players. In 1940, they won the World Professional Basketball Tournament, cementing their status as one of the best teams in the country. But their defining moment came in 1948 when they defeated the Minneapolis Lakers, an NBA powerhouse. This victory helped break racial barriers in basketball, paving the way for integration in the league. As the NBA started allowing Black players in the 1950s, the Globetrotters leaned into entertainment, adding humor, trick shots, and signature showmanship. Stars like Goose Tatum and Meadowlark Lemon turned the team into a global phenomenon, blending sports and comedy like never before. Today, the Globetrotters are basketball ambassadors, performing worldwide and inspiring generations. While their games are scripted, their impact on the sport—both in skill and in breaking racial barriers—is anything but.
