La Vuelta - Vuelta a España bike race

La Vuelta - Vuelta a España bike race

La Vuelta a España (English: Tour of Spain) is an annual multi-stage bicycle race in Spain, sometimes with stages in other countries. La Vuelta has 21 day-long stages over a 23-day period that includes 2 rest days. La Vuelta was first organised in 1935 and inspired by the success of the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia. The race did not take place during the Spanish Civil War or World War II, but since 1955 it has taken place annually and now attracts top riders from all over the world. Alongside the Tour de France and Giro d'Italia, la Vuelta a España is one of cycling's prestigious "Grand Tours".

The Vuelta is a UCI World Tour event, which means that the teams that compete in the race are mostly UCI WorldTeams, with the exception of the wild card teams that the organizers can invite. La Vuelta runs for three weeks in a changing route across Spain. While the route changes each year, the format of the race stays the same, with the appearance of at least two time trials, stages in the Pyrenees or the Cantabrian Mountains, and the finish in the Spanish capital Madrid.

The Vuelta a España has visited Barcelona 40 times over the years, including two starts in 1962 and 2023.
