The Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys (previously called Estadi Olímpic de Montjuïc) is the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona, Spain. The stadium is on Montjuic hill which overlooks Barcelona from the south of the city. If you are arriving to Barcelona by air, then you will probably pass Montjuic mountain on your way to the center of Barcelona. The stadium was originally built in 1927 for the 1929 Barcelona World Exposition and was renovated in 1989 to be the stadium for the 1992 Summer Olympic games. The Olympic stadium is named after the former president of the Catalan government Lluís Companys i Jover, who was executed at nearby Montjuïc Castle in 1940 by the Franco military dictatorship.
