Día de la Constitución Spain. Public holiday for Constitution Day in Spain. December 6th in Spain is celebrated as Constitution Day (Día de la Constitución), a national holiday commemorating the approval of the Spanish Constitution in 1978. This document marked a pivotal moment in Spain's transition to democracy following the end of Francisco Franco's dictatorship period. The Spanish Constitution (Spanish: Constitución Española) is the supreme law of the Kingdom of Spain. It was enacted after its approval in a constitutional referendum and represents the culmination of the Spanish transition to democracy. The current version of the Spanish Constitution was approved in 1978, three years after the death of dictator Francisco Franco.

The Día de la Constitución is always on 6th December and is part of the Puente de la Inmaculada. If the 6th and 8th fall near a weekend, then many Spaniards take time off work on the 7th December to created the 'Puente de la Inmaculada' by combining the public holiday on the 6th December with the public holiday on the 8th of December called La Immaculada - the Day of the Immaculate Conception.

Taking the day off that comes in between a public holiday (dia festivo) and the weekend, if the public/bank holiday, is on a Tuesday or Thursday, is called 'to make a bridge' or 'hacer puente' in Spanish. In Barcelona a puente usually means a big exodus of around 450,000 cars from Barcelona on big puente weekends. Be prepared for long traffic delays leaving and returning to Barcelona at the start and finish of a puente weekend.

This December puente is also often when the Barcelona ski season hopes to start so if there is snow many skiers will head for the Pyrenees mountains. There are Catalan and Spanish ski resorts close to Barcelona. It can snow in the Catalan Pyrenees as early as mid-November and all the ski resorts and stations near Barcelona hope to be open for the December puente break.

Are shops open on 6th December? 

The Día de la Constitución public holiday is usually one of the special shopping days in Barcelona and big stores like Corte Ingles department store and the Barcelona shopping malls usually will be open for Christmas shopping. Shops can usually choose to open for Christmas shopping. Christmas markets are usually open. In the center of Barcelona restaurants and tourist shops open on public and tours. Tourist attractions and museums operate normally.
