What is dress code - rules for what to wear to visit Montserrat abbey, Spain

Updated 2024

Generally the Catholic churches, and basilicas in Spain suggest appropriate clothing and many have rules and guidelines for what to wear and how to dress. The general guidelines are: no see-through clothing, tops should cover shoulders, no plunging necklines or exposed stomachs or backs. Shorts and skirts should come to at least mid-thigh, no swimwear and no hats except worn for religious beliefs. That said, at Montserrat monastery, they are not very strict about enforcing these rules for general visits outside services but in our opinion, it’s always considerate and respectful to other visitors at the monastery to follow them as much as possible.
