The unfinished Sagrada Familia church in Barcelona is one of the most famous buildings and tourist attractions in the world. It is top of the list for visitors to Barcelona in Spain. The Sacred Family church was designed by famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi over 130 years ago. The original foundation stone was laid in 1882, when the area surrounding the church was mostly fields with goats. In 2012 the splendid interior of the Sagrada Familia was officially opened and the church was consegrated by Pope Benedict. The exterior of the church is still being built and was at 80% completion in 2023, so there is some way to go. It is expected that Sagrada familia church will be finished in 2034 which will be 152 years after building started. Gaudi knew it would take a long time to finish the temple and he famously once said, "My client is not in a hurry!" Gaudi died tragically in 1926, when he was hit by a tram. Only the Nativity facade of the temple was finished at the time of his death. Visit the Sagrada familia on a hop-on-hop-off bus tour or take the metro to station Sagrada Familia.
