Plaça de Catalunya. Plaza Catalunya is downtown Barcelona's central square. It was designed by architect Francesc de Paula Nebot and inaugurated on November 2nd 1927 by Spanish King Alphonso XIII.

Plaça de Catalunya was designed with a small temple, a central colonnade, two fountains and many sculptures.

Plaza Catalunya has four sculptural groups representing the four Catalan capital cities of Barcelona, Girona, Lleida and Tarragona - and two groups representing the virtues of wisdom and labour.

On one corner of the plaza is a monument by renowned Catalan/Spanish artist and architecht Josep Maria Subirachs which is a tribute to Francesc Macià, a former president of the Catalan Government.
