The name Eixample means 'Extension' in the Catalan language. The Eixample district is very central and covers a large area of Barcelona. It is split into Eixample left and Eixample right and within these two parts are many different neighbourhoods.

At the middle part Eixample borders on the old gothic city and on the central square Plaça Catalunya which is a popular place to stay. Some of Barcelona's most iconic hotels are in the Eixample area and especially on elegant shopping boulevard Passeig de Gracia.
