More information about 2025 edition and route. The Tour de Catalonia bike race is a professional road bike race around Catalonia, Spain. The Volta a Catalunya stage race is one of the three oldest stage bike races in the world, only preceded by the Tour de France and the Gira d'Italia. The first edition of the Volta a Catalunya was on January 6th 1911 to 8th January 1911. The very first Volta a Catalunya was 363 km in total with a first stage from Barcelona to Tarragona via Sitges. The second stage was from Tarragona to Lleida. And the third from Lerida to Barcelona. Girona was not in the first Volta a Catalunya because the roads to Girona apparently were not good enough in those days. 34 riders started on Barcelona's Plaça de Sarrià. The first stage was from Barcelona to Tarragona at 97 km, the second from Tarragona to Lleida at 111 km and the final 157 km stage from Lleida back to Barcelona, totaling 363 km. 22 riders finished the race at the Velodrome di Sants. Catalan rider Sebastià Masdeu won the first and third stages and became the first overall winner. The winner's average speed was 23 km/h.

Final stage
The 7th final stage of the modern day Volta a Catalunya is always in Barcelona and usually starts and ends on Avinguda Reina Maria Cristina with laps round a circuit of 154,8km on Montjuïc hill.  Around 25 teams usually compete in the Volta.

Description 2024 Volta
The 2025 route will have three summit finishes, the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) station in La Molina (3rd stage), Montserrat (4th stage) and Queralt (6th stage). In the case of La Molina, it is impossible to forget the exciting finish in 2023 between the world champion and double Olympic medallist Remco Evenepoel and the Slovenian winner of the Vuelta, Primoz Roglic. A stage that ended up being won by the Belgian rider and that, on this occasion, is expected to be very hotly contested as the cyclists will have to face the longest stage of the entire 2025 Tour, starting from Viladecans, specifically from the Viladecans The Style Outlets centre.

The start of the race will once again be in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, a first stage starting and finishing in the town of Baix Empordà that will show us some of the most iconic places in the area. The following day, the town of Banyoles will welcome the convoy in a stage that will link the capital of Pla de l'Estany with Figueres, which will celebrate the passage of the Volta through the town for the 40th time in its history. A stage through the counties of Girona that will cover some of the most popular routes among cyclists from all over the world.

On Wednesday 26 March we will experience one of the toughest stages of the next edition. The first finish at altitude, in a 3rd stage starting from Viladecans the Style Outlets and finishing in the resort of La Molina. A long and hard stage that will test the runners' fitness.

The fourth stage will be one of the highlights and one of the most eagerly awaited novelties. For the first time Sant Vicenç de Castellet will host a stage start of the race, which will take the riders 30 years later, to the mountain of Montserrat.

Only one day after the high finish at La Molina, the riders will not have time to recover, as the following day they will face the second high finish of the race. In the year of the Monastery's thousandth anniversary celebrations, the emblematic mountain is sure to leave us with spectacular images that will travel around the world. On Friday 28 March it will be the turn of Terres de l'Ebre.

Another of the great novelties and a long-awaited stage in the South of Catalonia, which will show the municipality of Paüls (Baix Ebre) and will finish in the capital of Montsià, Amposta. We are talking about a stage that will show us the singular and unique landscapes of Terres de l'Ebre, thanks to the passage of the race through its four regions: Baix Ebre, Montsià, Terra Alta and Ribera d'Ebre.

The penultimate stage of the race needs no introduction. After making its debut in the last edition of the race, the high finish in Queralt (Berguedà) promises strong emotions. A stage that last year left us with images that we will take a long time to forget. The city of Berga will be the starting point of a stage that will cross the Berguedà region to face the climb to Queralt. More than sixty years later, the Volta returned to Berga and did so by the front door. The images of the best cyclists on the planet, amidst waves of fans who never stopped cheering the riders on, represent one of the most striking photographs of the Catalan race.

Finally, on Sunday 30 March it will be Barcelona's turn. The Catalan capital and the emblematic ascent to Montjuïc represent the best possible end to a UCI World Tour event that has become a consolidated part of the international calendar, bringing the best teams in the world to Catalonia with the best stars of their squad. The final route with the mileage of each of the stages, the cumulative elevation gain and the mountain passes will be revealed at the official presentation of the race.
