The currency is Spain was pesetasbefore the Euro. Spain switched to Euros on January 1st, 2002. The euro bank notes come in denominations of € 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and a whopping 500 euro notes, the latter being a small fortune. Euros coins are in denominations of: €1, €2, 1¢, 2¢, 5¢,10¢, 20¢ and 50¢ (¢ = cents) Generally anything above 50 euro notes can be difficult to change, so try and make sure you have some smaller notes when you arrive or change them at the airport banks.
