31st March 1492
On March 31st March 1492, in the Alhambra's Hall of the Ambassadors, the joint Catholic Monarchs of Spain, Ferdinand and Isabella, signed an edict, the Alhambra Decree, expelling the Jews from Spain. It was enacted to eliminate Jewish influence on Spain's large 'converso' population and to ensure that conversos did not revert to Judaism. A converso is a Jew who publicly recanted the Jewish faith and adopted Christianity following pressure by the Spanish Inquisition. The Alhambra is a palace and fortress complex located in Granada, Andalusia, Spain. It is one of the most famous monuments of Islamic architecture in Spain and one of the best-preserved palaces of the historic Islamic world
